Notes
Marble Painting 3 and 4 continue Chen’s deliberate mash-ups of street art, circus, Japanese and American popular culture, Buddhist and Hindu iconography, carnival sideshow and queer visual culture to make new and glorious hybrids. The inlaid Marble Paintings present the girl and old man of Ishvara as postmodern totems. The forehead stamp combines the third eye and crescent moon associated with the god Shiva; the tears are borrowed from manga comics, where they signify deep emotion. Chen’s stated aim is to create contemporary religious experiences and create new religious iconography.
