Notes
The precision and meticulous detail of Zhao’s technique is evident in the Dry Season series (2014), small works painted in oil on wood inspired by a visit to South East Asia. They depict extreme close-up views of plants, grasses and fallen leaves viewed from above. These works transport us into the shoes of the artist, as he walks through the landscape, carefully observing the smallest details – things that might otherwise go unnoticed. The English Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins, wrote, ‘Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet’; Zhao Xuebing selects small, humble elements of the natural world and makes us see their beauty.
