Gu Liang’s meticulously crafted works demonstrate his interest in the physicality of objects, which he represents using illusionistic techniques of light and shadow. His series of ‘Half Cube’ paintings creates apparently 3-D forms on the 2-D surface of his canvas, multi-dimensional spaces in which planes, lines, light and shadow intersect in almost Escher-like optical illusions.
