Notes
Over the months it takes to complete just one monumental drawing, Hu Liu uses thousands of pencils. At first sight impenetrably black, on closer inspection the sheen of graphite reveals the subtle, rhythmic marks of the artist’s patient hand. Grass seems to be at once light and dark. Despite the physical challenges of her method, Hu Liu sees the process as a kind of meditation, an embodiment of the Daoist belief in harmony between yin and yang: ‘to know whiteness yet preserve blackness is to be the model for the world’.
