Notes
Li Qiang’s works are created in a process that has been described as ‘dematerialization’. He tears and shreds the pages of popular magazines and the products of the ‘official’ Chinese print media into strips, before reassembling them into complex compositions that become portraits or landscapes. Liang is taking a stand against the overwhelming deluge of information to which we are subjected every day in the print and online media, which he sees as the accumulation of knowledge, as distinct from wisdom. ‘Ocean’ refers to a Chinese saying, ‘The sea becomes mulberry fields’ – time changes everything. In this information age, he says, today’s news is tomorrow’s history, and everything will vanish.
