Notes
Zong Ning’s photographs are hybrids between painting and photography, just as the models in his works often become hybrid beings themselves, transforming from humans to other life forms. He positions his subjects – sometimes friends, family or random strangers, and sometimes himself – against the wall of his studio on which he paints surreal and disturbing imagery. The prints that result are like mysterious fables or allegories, reflecting Zong’s interest in Daoist and Buddhist philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine. Here, two naked men and two women sit cross-legged, becoming trees in the forest. Zong says this work is about reincarnation.
