Chen Wenbo’s hyper-realist paintings of ordinary household objects and manufactured goods are given a heightened resonance by his painting style – the flattened surface and exaggerated highlights and shadows of monumental advertising hoardings. Here we see an ornate electric chandelier in extreme close-up. This symbol of wealth, glamour and luxury is rendered banal by the deadpan painting style from which all traces of the artist’s hand have been removed.
