Notes
‘Defendant’ is a continuing series of works that Liu started in 2013, investigating the tensions that lie within the human-nature relationship. Applying impasto paint with his hands, he creates mysterious images featuring a blurred figure’s profile emerging from thick, crisscrossing branches, or simply human limbs intertwining with overly large vines and leaves. In his work, nature overpowers human beings, which recalls the American science fiction documentary series ‘Life After People’, underscoring the overwhelming power of the natural environment and its vitality. Painting with fingers instead of brushes, he relives the most primitive and ancient methods of art practice used by human ancestors. Liu says, ‘The work may seem raw and unmediated, like something you paste on a rock after it is dried. It gives me a sense of returning to nature.’
