Notes
Among a group of young artists who remained defiantly loyal to the local culture and folk art traditions of Kaohsiung, A Kui (real name Hsu Tzu-kuey or Tzu-Kuei) emerged as a leading figure. Born in 1956 in Kaohsiung, his sculptural training at National Taiwan Normal University, followed by further study at the Pratt Institute in New York, inspired him to experiment with non-traditional forms of sculptural practice such as the papier-mache animals in the White Rabbit Collection. A Kui describes his work as ‘three-dimensional painting’ and his love of vivid colour infuses his delightfully quirky imaginary creatures.
