The ‘AK47 Girl’ painting series is inspired by the famous Japanese idol girl group ‘AKB48’ with their uniform white shirt and short skirts. In Chen’s paintings, they are part of an authoritarianism regime. Here, a group of ‘AK47 Girls’ accompany a caricature of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on a ship. The title likely refers to the popular Japanese manga series and animation of the same title, ‘One Piece,’ about a group of pirates.
