Notes
In this untitled painting from 2015, we see a hectic profusion of birds and flowers. The artist quotes Oscar Wilde: ‘Illusion is the first of all pleasures.’ The smooth, glossy forms of the bird and blooms suggest they might indeed be fake. Su is interested in the tipping points between luxury and glamour, and decadence and decay. Borrowing from a lexicon of visual imagery from east, west and everywhere in-between, he cleverly illuminates the paradoxes of historical and contemporary global consumption.
