Notes
Lin Hsiu-Niang’s delicate porcelain structure evokes an underwater landscape of coral and frilled, waving seaweed, or breaking waves eddying around a rocky shore. Yet the artist says she was inspired by the patterns and structures of ancient Chinese clothing. Taiwan was once home to an indigenous tradition of indigo-dyed textiles – the colour of 2013-7 and its layers of sinuously curled and twisted clay shapes evoke layered, gauzy fabrics. Lin has rolled and pinched very fine slabs and strips of fine porcelain clay to construct the form, which is then sprayed with glaze and fired at very high temperatures. Of her fragile sculptures Lin says: ‘A finished piece is one that survives the kiln.’
