Notes
Works in the ‘To and Fro’ Series, 2011-2013, are made of paper that was stuck to the floor of Kong Xi’s art studio in Beijing. During the making process, footprints were overlapped with each other intentionally or unintentionally, while the artist and his visitors walked back and forth on them. Dust and dirt accumulated layer after layer, penetrating in the fibre of the paper, at the same time, silently documenting parts of Kong’s daily life. The faded traces of the past have been compressed into the mottled and torn surface, which generates rich details, yet unrecognisable abstract images. Kong Xi said: ‘the thin grey layer reveals the most realistic world but also the most far-reaching and imaginary passage of time and space, with invisible endless depth.’
