With dense groupings of tiny nails, Chen Chun-Hao simulates the diagonals of square-edged brush marks on the jagged rocks in traditional Song Dynasty ink painting. Areas of blank canvas stand in for the puffs of cloud and water in the original. Using the same technique, in 12 Animals (2015) Chen represents the twelve creatures of the Chinese zodiac; clusters of nails create dynamic, lively characterisations of the lunar animals.
