Notes
Grainy, black and white images of a swelling ocean and waves breaking on a beach create an eerie and foreboding atmosphere. The movement of the waves is jerky, due to the stop-motion animation of still shots. The lack of sound contributes to the somewhat sinister atmosphere. Influenced by philosopher Merleau-Ponty, the artist says she was exploring how the invisible can be made visible through the actions of the body. She says: ‘The invisible moving waves, featuring as black & white sketch-like images in this work, were uncovered or unsealed the by the body who pressed the shutter, adjusted the light and colour when editing the film, and created the chronological images according to the rhythm of clicking the shutter.’
