After a hiatus of some years when he became disillusioned with the relentless pressure of the international art market (he describes it as ‘a pause’), Shi Yong returned to sculptural installation with a series of works collectively entitled Let All Potential Be Internally Resolved Using Beautiful Form (2015). The highly refined abstract forms of relief sculptures, made from building and interior decoration materials — timber, plywood, polyethylene, steel, aluminium, plastic, paint and wallpaper – were lined up along the walls of the gallery, resting on the floor like pieces from a giant child’s modernist construction kit. Shi Yong intended each piece to represent the fragments of a human body, suggesting that appearances are deceptive. Let All Potential Be Internally Resolved Using Beautiful Form No.22 is an asymmetrical composition with varied surfaces that include wallpaper, paint, board, plastics and aluminium.
