After a hiatus of some years when he became disillusioned with the relentless pressure of the international art market (he describes it as ‘a pause’), Shi Yong returned to sculptural installation with a series of works collectively entitled Let All Potential Be Internally Resolved Using Beautiful Form (2015). The highly refined abstract forms of relief sculptures, made from building and interior decoration materials — timber, plywood, polyethylene, steel, aluminium, plastic, paint and wallpaper – were lined up along the walls of the gallery, resting on the floor like pieces from a giant child’s modernist construction kit. Shi Yong intended each piece to represent the fragments of a human body, suggesting that appearances are deceptive. Let All Potential Be Internally Resolved Using Beautiful Form No.7 is in a shiny geometric form and bright sunshine yellow that recall 1960s graphics and textiles.
