Magic Box is a celebration of imagination and discovery for the artist and the viewer. Wang Zhiyuan has captured the universal delight of opening a box to discover a cornucopia of forgotten treasures and here he has created a wall sculpture to evoke private thoughts and memories for each individual viewer regardless of age, gender or culture. The charm of the artwork lies in its simplicity and its ability to make us see ourselves of long ago. There is a sense of theatre about it, and the combination of lighting and shadows creates a sense of magic. Wang Zhiyuan has a deep appreciation of the singular form and each piece of the sculpture has been designed, as he says, “to grow out of the wall and produce a totally different sensation for each viewer.”
