Notes
Dong Wensheng continues to differentiate conceptual photography from mass production image processes: with the 2015 Continuum series, for instance, he created ambiguous camera-less photographs suggestive of celestial bodies. Dong Wensheng made unique prints by exposing photographic paper to light and chemical interactions in the darkroom, before hand-colouring the images. Through an experimental approach to the photographic medium, and the use of coded images such as the Chinese garden, shan shui landscapes, scars on the human body, and the passage of light, he evokes grand themes: for Dong Wensheng, photography is a means of paying attention to fleeting moments of light and shadow that illuminate his two subjects: life, and time.
