Anomaly (2015), an installation of meteor shaped sponges that Aaajiao sees as an extension of his Karesansui works, was inspired by the artist’s love for science fiction, and his interest in exploring the furthest realms of speculative science. The forms may be read as space junk, intergalactic rock forms, or cancerous mutating cells. Aaajiao says that Karesansui (including Anomaly) and Object series are like two sides of the mirror: Karesansui is the virtual objects made real, and Object series is real objects made virtual. Their juxtaposition suggests that we can no longer easily distinguish the real from the virtual.
