In Limited Landscape, Unlimited (2014) Aaajiao explores geological evolution, creating an ever changing landscape of onscreen components, photographs and a maglev installation featuring a sculpture prototype spinning in the air, levitating with the support of magnetic fields. Any Microsoft Windows user is familiar with the blue screen that results from a fatal system error — this is the colour Aaajiao selected for the background of his images. Undulating black pixels take the forms of rocks and rugged mountains, set against a stark blue that also recalls the bluescreens used for movie special effects or TV weather forecasts. Here, though, it evokes the lakes, oceans and waterways of an entirely virtual landscape.
