In the Object series (2014), aaajiao references the scholar rocks of Chinese classical tradition, used in garden design, painted by the literati, and placed as objects of contemplation in the scholar’s study. Here, though, the ‘rocks’ have been created with algorithms and captured within small screens. Here, tumbling bright blue ‘rocks’ appear on 2 screens, vertically arranged. In collaboration with a team of media artists, a designer, a programmer and an engineer, the artist has created video portraits of stones, introducing a fourth dimension of time to the classical painterly compositions of the imperial past.
