Notes
Karesansui (2014) is an artificial miniature world of strange black forms that appear to grow from the walls and floor of the gallery space. These protruding limbs are made of sponge, but appear as hard as rock. Zen gardens were designed as perfected forms of the natural world, places for quiet contemplation. Rather than the physical world of rocks, sand and water, Aaajiao’s installation was created with algorithms and a graphical program that facilitates physical interfaces, real-time motion graphics, audio and video. It recalls the peaceful gardens of classical China. (Karesansui is a term for Japanese ‘dry landscape’ Zen gardens of carefully placed rocks, with sand or gravel raked into patterns intended to represent ripples in water.)
