Notes
Wang Luyan became interested in the symbolic possibilities of machinery and mechanical parts when he was working as a lathe operator at the Beijing Furnace Factory. His series of paintings of brightly coloured wristwatches reflect on geopolitics and global conflict hotspots. The face of Global Watch displays various zones of conflict around the world. Wang suggests that as the gears turn and the hands move around the dial, the flashpoints for military aggression will be subject to arbitrary change. Wang Luyan’s paintings, despite their apparent simplicity, are allegories of the modern world: the globe as a ticking time bomb.
