Notes
With its scratchy, spiky lines delineating rough, green, rock-like forms, a tree trunk and blue leaves, Hsu Yu-Jen’s ink painting is a reinvention of the conventions of shan shui painting. Hsu’s work reveals his deep connection to the natural world and his affinity with the tradition of literati paintings of mountains, water, pine forests and bamboo groves – he had a studio located beside the Yangmingshan National Reserve, where he immersed himself in the landscape. He told writer Gao Wei, ‘This is a spiritual and spatial connection, a connection to the natural world outside. Man and nature become closely related and can communicate at any moment.’
