Notes
Hsu Yu-Jen’s experimental, idiosyncratic style of ink painting exemplifies his stated aim: he has said, “I aim to find an absolutely original style of ink-wash painting.” With no formal training prior to spontaneously enrolling to study painting at the then National Academy of Fine Arts, he overturned tradition and developed a unique visual language, introducing geometric shapes and a distinct repertoire of brush marks. Hsu sometimes uses a dry brush, and broken lines; his paintings are populated by a vocabulary of dots, lines and planes. Often, his works recall the agricultural Taiwanese landscapes of his boyhood. Although his style is non-traditional, Hsu is deeply invested in the ancient Chinese tradition of the ‘san jue’, or ‘three perfections’ – ink painting, calligraphy and poetry.
