Notes
Chen’s dramatic black and white photographs reveal the excitement of the Beehive Festival and other Taiwanese religious processions and rituals. Performers with elaborate, fearsome masks and head-dresses are surrounded by billowing smoke and shredded paper fragments from thousands of fireworks. Chen removes colour from his photographs, believing it would distract from his focus on the relationship between people and gods. The images possess a powerful intensity: a small boy grimaces, hands over his ears, afraid of the noise. A line of people pray, kneeling in the road, waiting for Matsu, the sea goddess
