Exuberantly expressive and spontaneous, Li Zhenzhong’s paintings are inflected by hybrid eastern/western influences ranging from the vivid, simplified landscapes of the Fauvists and the strong colour and brush marks of the German Expressionists, to the sweeping ink and wash paintings of the Song and Ming Dynasty literati painters. Li’s native Hunan Province is primarily rural, its landscapes dominated by vivid green rice paddies, ploughed fields for planting crops, and golden fields of rapeseed: these images recur in the artist’s memories and emerge in his paintings.
