Liao often employs deliberately cheesy pictographs and symbols: a heart recurs in paintings and sculptural works such as B (2014), a metal and enamel green letter ‘b’ with a heart-shaped hole, standing upright like a structure from a children’s playground: the cut-out red heart lies on the ground. Using the debased visual language of commercial culture is a strategy he employs to satirise the world of advertising and the reality television and gameshow culture of ‘If You Are the One’. Is Liao ‘faux-naïf’ as some have described him, or is he expressing a genuinely felt, plaintive sense of loss, in an authentically direct manner?
