In Lonely Party, Your Love is Most Wanted Among Officers (2013), a badly rendered, schematic moon and a spherical planet follow each other down a path, a scribble of blue sky behind them. In a Chinese context where painters are still taught from the French and Russian academic tradition, emerging from the art academies with virtuosic skills, Liao Guohe is a complete anomaly. His work is irreverent and brash, apparently effortless, although he says, ‘It looks random but to get there I went through a great deal of trial and error and many sketches.’
