A lost, lonely figure is at the centre of Firenze Lai’s Raincoat (2012). A man in a long, dark coat poses against a greenish background that might be a stormy landscape. He stands as stiff as an Egyptian statue, hands by his sides, his tiny head slightly tilted to one side as he peers anxiously out of the painting. Lai’s figures, often observed at moments of self-consciousness, seem uncomfortable, alienated from their surroundings.
