Ms Fong Heung (2013) depicts a serious face gazing from the canvas. Ms Fong looks slightly to her left, as if uncertain or fearful; the effect is melancholy. Her face is heavily white-painted, with bluish shadows, as is her broad-shouldered white coat. The strongest colours are her dark hair and a deep turquoise blouse, both textured roughly with sgraffito revealing the deep pink underpainting. The subject was based on a supermarket cashier wearing a name tag that, when pronounced in Chinese, means ‘direction’. Mechanically collecting money, lost in her own internal world, this girl’s silent presence stayed in the artist’s mind, emerging as a sombre portrait many years later.
