Notes
Huang Yan’s paintings are inspired by his birthplace in Hunan Province and its connection to the ancient Zhou Dynasty culture of the Chu State, and influenced by Buddhism's injunction to seek enlightenment by looking within. The demonic creatures that lurk beneath their shadowy surfaces are shaped by his fascination with extra-terrestrials and blackholes, shamanism and divination, mythical monsters, and the weirdly eroded forms of taihu rocks. He says they represent a world behind reality, a “mysterious ecosystem” that drives us yet eludes our conscious control.
