Hokusai-style waves and traditional, curling Chinese clouds and mist surround the characters in each of the 7 panels of this work, who adopt martial arts poses as if trying to control the weather that circles around the globe. Apart from his technical command of the demanding gongbi painting technique, requiring the artist to have control of fine ink lines applied with a brush to xuan paper or silk, the influence of other East Asian iconography including ukiyo-e woodblock prints is evident in this work.
