Notes
Look! Look! is a half metre square, mirror-finish, stainless-steel open-topped cube. Inside are four steel inner cubes. The work is filled with water to the very top – the viewer looks into the water and sees their own reflection. A pump creates a bubble that rises to the surface every 15 seconds. Li says, ' Look, stare, reflect...some people see peace or love, while others see horror and hatred. Some are content, others haunted...But regardless, each will see the occasional bubble rise slowly to the surface and burst.' The title is taken from a Buddhist text. Li says, 'I am interested in Buddhist text and philosophy as I am interested in many things.' Recalling monuments and stele as much as referencing minimalist sculpture, in its pared-back simplicity, Look! Look! asks us to do just that – and in looking, we are invited to pause, be silent, and wonder at the impermanence of all things.
