Notes
Jiang Jian says his works are about the hidden ‘other face’ on the top of our heads, rarely seen or even acknowledged, a little wild and mysterious. Each strand of hair is meticulously carved out of the surface of the monochrome oil paint with a razorblade, creating a textural surface that simulates how hair grows in its unique whorls and patterns, as individual as a fingerprint. Jiang is interested in how standards of beauty are applied to aspects of our faces and bodies, while other parts are exempt from these judgements. In the end, his carefully rendered, highly detailed oil paintings of the hair growing on the crowns of various heads are about our common, shared humanity.
