Notes
Huang Shun-Hsing’s ‘Unaccompanied’ series of gestural ink and brush works reveal the juxtaposition of eastern and western influences – Chinese calligraphy and loose xie yi ink painting techniques underpin his practice, but these works also evoke the ways that mid-century modernist abstract painters in America such as Mark Tobey, Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell absorbed and adapted eastern traditions. The figurative references are inescapable – and subversive.
