Putting on Makeup (2013), was inspired by a boyhood memory, when Shyu Ruey-Shiann worked on a building site, painting the walls. Mechanically operated house-painting brushes flip manically backwards and forwards, like the actions of workers made invisible by sorcery. Some have interpreted the title as a reference to a woman applying make-up, a kind of artifice or a disguise, but the artist thinks of painting a wall as preparing for the future, a positive embrace of new possibilities.
