A series of hand-coloured gelatin silver prints produced in 2012, including 201307, makes a connection between sexuality and floral or garden imagery. In this case the traditional moon window, through which a beautiful vista could be seen in a scholar’s garden, is replaced by a circular hole cut in his tattooed model’s red silk dress to reveal her breast. A large pink flower – perhaps a peony – hides her face. Dong Wensheng’s subjects are almost always masked, or turned away, their identities concealed.
