In 199703 a branch of cherry blossom is held against an abstract, painterly background. The background is black and white while the blossom is hand coloured, referencing the early history of photography in China during the Qing Dynasty. Instead of the graceful hand of a traditional beauty, however, the blooms are held aloft by a clearly masculine hand, subverting the elegant refinement of the tradition.
