Sisters (2012) depicts two distinctly unglamorous girls. Wearing only coloured leggings, they stand facing the viewer, one with her arm casually draped over the other’s shoulder, her other hand placed insouciantly on her tilted hip. Their naked breasts are heavy and widely spaced. They are brave, these girls, nonchalantly returning our gaze, reminiscent of the barmaid in Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergere: a working girl, a little tired and a little dreamy, thinking her own thoughts. These two sisters face the world together, with attitude.
