Lady (2012) is a head and shoulders portrait of a young woman whose tilted head is turned to face us in the manner of a nineteenth-century portrait by Ingres. Despite her slight smile, she conveys melancholy in the angle of her head and her distant, abstracted gaze. She does not meet our eyes. With these works, Sun Hongbin suggests a sense of general societal malaise, and a willingness to cover deeply felt emotions with a performance of contentment.
