Notes
Girl (2012) is an image of a child that recalls Renoir’s somewhat saccharine paintings of children: even her frilly party frock and the giant yellow bow in her frizzed hair recall the Impressionist painter. Her face, though, is more watchful than winsome, with a determined angle to her lips. Sun Hongbin says that he is interested in exploring what goes on in children’s minds, and aims to ‘capture the mystery behind their eyes’. He is attentive to the private moments in which people are most themselves, when they are unobserved, or when they are confident of the way they will be viewed.
