Sun Hongbin is attentive to the private moments in which people are most themselves, when they are unobserved, or when they are confident of the way they will be viewed. The entirely unselfconscious facial expressions of a baby are thus rich territory for exploration. Yawning Baby (2012) is a work painted on plywood, in which the bald pink and white head, scrunched-up eyes, wrinkled nose, and wide-stretched mouth of the infant fill the small field. It is impossible to look at this painting without yawning in sympathy. Sun revels in the oddities and inherent humour of people caught in everyday moments.
