Notes
Sun Hongbin admires the Impressionist paintings of Degas and Renoir, as well as Old Master painters such as Goya, Rembrandt and Velasquez. His close study of their works is evident in the softness of his brush-marks and the layered glazing of his tiny, quirky portraits and landscapes. Like the intimate, closely observed portraits of the Impressionist painters, Sun’s works convey a sensual visual pleasure, but they also have a playful sense of humour. He does not work from models, nor from photographs of real people, but instead draws from a cast of invented characters, and from glimpses of random people he has seen on the street, and remembered.Nude (2012) appears self-consciously erotic – she lies on her back diagonally across a bed, hair fanned out beneath her, with her legs in the air (although the edge of the canvas prevents us seeing more than one milk-white thigh).
