Li Jun had always been fascinated by the history of woodblock printing in China, and he studied printmaking at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts. The ‘Eyes Right’ series was inspired by people he saw in the street and on the subway, a new generation who appeared to the artist to be a little lost and burdened by the stress of modern life. The actual images that he used for his large prints were random photographs downloaded from the internet and digitally manipulated to make them appear like sightless classical statues, carved from marble. With their contemporary clothing of sweaters, jackets and, in two works, broken glasses, his subjects appear seem to have been turned to stone.
